Motorola, famous maker of phones and tablet computers and computing hardware in general, was recently acquired by Google.  Recent comments by the Motorola CEO illuminate a shift in strategy.

If you haven’t been paying attention, now might be a time to start.

In 2013, Motorola more or less pulled the plug on making tablet computers.  The tech world is urgently wondering why, and monitoring the situation with great interest.

Myself, a very happy owner of a 2 year old Xoom tablet wonders what’s next.  So here’s what Motorola and Google are devoting themselves to solving…

Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside unveiled in a recent interview  “…we are looking at tablets…There might be a day we do that, but the bigger opportunity for us is the five billion people without smartphones,” As Woodside puts it, regarding the mobile internet: “We have to decide and convince consumers we stand for something and what we are focused on is the mobile internet.”

Five billion people?  Where would those folks live, and what does the Google / Motorola perspective tell you about how you should be thinking about your business?
